Automatic Vehicle Identification
What is AVI?
Answer: AVI stands for Automatic Vehicle Identification
(AVI), and is a tag that’s placed on your vehicle’s windshield that
will automatically open entry gates and allow hands-free access to gated decks and
lots.
Why use automatic vehicle identification (AVI) technology to control gates?
Answer: Programmed information is scanned and sent to
the database for verification. The system is extremely fast, authenticating access
in fractions of a second. This makes it quick and convenient to access your parking
area.
What are the benefits of AVI?
Answer: AVI will operate successfully in all University
gated decks and lots. It provides several benefits:
- Quick and convenient to access your parking deck or lot.
- It saves the time and eliminates the frustration of fumbling for forgotten or misplaced
hangtags.
- It controls access to an area, encouraging only legal parking in the area.
- The devices can be disabled easily if stolen, unlike hangtags.
How much does an AVI cost?
Answer: Parking Services will offer this service for
registered permit holders, at no extra cost. Only a replacement fee of $10 will
apply if required.
Where can I park?
Answer: The AVI device will allow you to access one
of the following locations: E01, N06, or S15. Please note that your vehicle will
still need to be registered with Parking Services, and certain restrictions apply
for specific locations.
What happens if the AVI device doesn’t work?
Answer: Contact the Parking Services office at 706 542-PARK.
A customer service representative will assist you to resolve the problem.
What happens if the AVI device is lost or stolen?
Answer: Notify Parking Services immediately if the device
is stolen. Come to Parking Services' office to arrange for a replacement and to
deactivate the old device. There will be a permit replacement fee of $35 and an
AVI device replacement charge of $10.
How to Use Your AVI Device
Answer: When properly installed, your AVI device will
automatically activate the entry/exit gates at your assigned AVI location.
Note: A Parking Service attendant will position the device on the windshield of
your vehicle. Please take a few minutes and review the information below to familiarize
yourself with the operation of the AVI system.
- Devices displayed in any other fashion will be out of alignment with antennas and
will not function properly.
- On rare occasions, a device will not open the gates due to deflection of the signal
by in-glass metal from defrosters or radio antennas, or polarized glass. If you
experience any difficulty using an AVI device, contact Parking Services at 706-542-PARK.
- Approach the gates slowly. Although your AVI device will be very quickly authorized,
the gates are mechanical and require a few seconds to open.
- Do not tailgate vehicles in front of you, as that vehicle may obstruct the RF signal
between your device and the antenna. Allow a safe and reasonable distance –
a car length -- between yourself and others.
If I have to replace my AVI permit, what is the cost?
Answer: There’s a permit replacement fee of $35 and
an AVI device replacement charge of $10.
